Leg 2 - 24 March 2013
Cold and Snowy
Approximate distance 13 Km or 8 miles
The scene is set
When the car was dropped off at Caistor the ride back to Barnetby was interesting to say the least. Living at the lower levels we didn't realise how much snow remained in the Wolds. On Phil & Gavins drive back from Caistor they came across a lorry driver who had only just managed to get his lorry through on the top road. The snow drifts were completely across the road in some places.
The Ancholme Valley to the west would have been a boggy marsh at the time the area was settled by the Danes. Their influence is readily detected in the village names ending in "by". Sheltered sites with springs, lower slopes suitable for agriculture and high wolds for grazing, led to numerous settlements in close proximity to each other. How cold was this walk going to be? There were initial fears at the start of the walk that Barbara's jacket would interfere with the radar at Humberside Airport!

The monument above the village of Somerby was erected in 1770 by Edward and Ann Weston of Somerby Hall. The inscription at the bottom of the column explains it's celebrates 29 years "of their happy conjugal union"

Diane thought it would be funny to release the map and description sheet so that it could run free. Phil really enjoyed running across the field to capture it again.
When we reached the pub in Caistor the locals were really impressed that the effing walkers were in. The Town pump was erected to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. Which is brighter, The lion or Barbara's jacket?
Leg 1 - 02 March 2013
Barton upon Humber to Barnetby le Wold
APPROXIMATE DISTANCE 22.5 Kilometres or 14 miles for the older ones amongst us

| The hat makes it's first appearance on the Viking Way |
After we had dropped the car off at the Whistle & Flute pub in Barnetby Le Wold. Met Gavin & Diane at the Humber bridge viewpoint . Before we started, we paused for a moment to remember absent friends who will hopefully join us on later stages. After the obligatory photo we set off on what was to be a long day
After following the Humber bank the route climbs inland to cross Elsham Wolds, before descending to the valley of the Skegger Beck and the railway junction town of Barnetby.
We left the start point at 10:08am and set off with great views across the Humber Estuary which was like a mill pond. On the left was a tile factory with impressive walls made from tiles stacked end on end four high. We carried on past Farr Ings nature reserve with views back to the bridge
The saga of the keys!
OH NO! The car keys are in the back of your car Phil. (Or words to that effect)
After a mile and a half it was realised that the car keys for the lift back were in one of the cars in the car park at Barton. Phil kindly agreed to escort Steve back to the cars to collect them. An extra 3 miles onto the 14! We passed a couple who we had already passed once, we then passed them again on the way back. They couldn’t understand why we liked that footpath so much. We finally caught the others above South Ferriby.
Eventually arrived at pub about 16:30 after a long and tiring first leg, hope the others a bit shorter!
